How It Began

Hanna Grobler

Hanna Grobler, a distinguished actress holding a Honors Degree in Drama, garnered recognition through her roles in numerous South African movies and television series. However, she is perhaps best known for her impactful role as the Managing Director of the Hanna Charity & Empowerment Foundation.

Operating across thirteen communities in Pretoria, Johannesburg, KZN, Mpumalanga and Cape Town, the Hanna Charity & Empowerment Foundation, under Hanna’s leadership, has been making a meaningful impact. Hanna’s journey as a philanthropist commenced during her school years. She reflects, “I believe the insight into helping others is innate—an understanding of their needs. My ‘insight’ was inherited from my mother, Marietjie, a social worker. Even during my drama studies at Stellenbosch University, I started helping street children; it’s a cause that has always been part of my life.”

Returning to her hometown, Pretoria, Hanna took to the streets, personally delivering food and clothing in her car. “I realized the magnitude of the need in our country and began hosting concerts at my home to raise funds for soup kitchens in Elandspoort (west of Pretoria).” Within three years, her efforts grew into a robust network, leading to the registration of a non-profit organization in March 2008. Today, with a dedicated team of volunteers and a strong management team sharing a common goal, the Hanna Charity & Empowerment Foundation serves close to 6,000 individuals. The organization provides support through initiatives such as soup kitchens, clothing banks, training programs, libraries, after-school centers, early childhood development programs, skills workshops, and life skills programs.

Hanna shares her perspective: “Charity is my calling; I am convinced this is my purpose. Continuously engaged in planning to create a better world for those less fortunate, I often encounter daunting situations without clear solutions. Yet, everything eventually falls into place as it should.

Our management team consists entirely of dedicated and passionate women, each with a background in corporate careers who have found purpose in charity work. In addition to our committed management team, we have a diverse group of employees, including teachers, chefs, and assistants, who contribute their skills and expertise in various areas.
